A collection of my favorite St Louis donut shops as told by my Instagram feed. I ran this series of the best donuts in St Louis on Instagram starting in June of 2020. The focus was on donuts that would be easy to carry out and enjoy with safe social distancing practices in mind.

Each photo is linked up with the donut shop’s website. Further down the page, I’ve added a feed of all the original posts on Instagram so you can explore each post without ever leaving this page! Pretty cool, right? Enjoy lusting after delicious donuts and dreaming of which one you want to try out next. That’s what I’m doing.

Last donut photo! (I swear. At least for a while!)

This weekend I hit the ground running to finish up some of those home improvement projects that we started on but never finished. Now that all our extra time at home is coming to an end, it felt completely necessary to wrap some stuff up. I spent all day Saturday removing cabinet doors and staining those. We stained the top cupboards months ago, but never got around to the bottom cabinets. It was time to get that done. I also restained our stair railing that was in serious need of a spruce up (gel stain is a life saver, you guys!!) All of Saturday night, I spent some much needed time hanging frames and getting photos printed. After almost 10 months in our house, it’s finally starting to look like we’re moved in.

Anyone else slow to get settled in, or is it just me?

A box of Donuts that reads "serving the finest coffee in town - Donut Drive In. St Louis"

@GreetingsFromKelly:

This week was exhausting. All week long, I had one foot in pandemic life and one foot in the back-to-normal life. I was back in the office all week working on two big projects. But then after work, I was back to working on our quarantine projects and staying up late, forgetting I have to wake up early in the morning. Repeat for five days. So happy it’s the weekend!

What are your plans this weekend?

A white brick building with a large plastic sign above that reads "Donut Drive in"

@GreetingsFromKelly:

Summer in St. Louis is my absolute favorite place to be. I don’t even care that it’s a million degrees here, all the sunshine and blue skies makes it 100% worth it!

What’s your favorite season?

A paper bag with a bright yellow banner that reads "Donuts" and then a phone number and address: 241-3360, 1618 S Broadway.

@GreetingsFromKelly:

Our whole donut journey has been 100% carry-out. It was exactly the boost I needed to get out into the world again without too much unnecessary exposure.

I’ve got a few more donut pics to round out the week, and then I’m switching to something new!

Have you tried dining out yet, or are you still living the curbside & carry-out life?

A donut shop store front with a bright yellow awning that reads "John's Donuts." Directly underneath, there is a sign that says "Slow Donut Zone" that looks like a sign you might see in a school crossing zone.

@GreetingsFromKelly:

John’s Donuts is a staple of the St. Louis donut scene. They’re open almost 24-hours a day, aside from a few hours that they reserve for making your donuts, so you can stop here for an early morning or late night snack. I have a few fond memories of stopping here at ridiculous hours of the night during college. And I’m glad to report their donuts taste just as good at 11am as they do at 2am.

A large display case with donuts inside. In the background, there is a bunch of superman paraphernalia on the walls and a high up shelf.

@GreetingsFromKelly:

Back in the office full-time this week and already missing the slow mornings with a cup of hot coffee and a freshly made breakfast. Anyone else back to working in the office?

I’ve got lots of photos from our camping trip this weekend coming to the feed, but I’ve got a few more donut pics for you first. 🍩

Six large square shaped donuts from Vincent Van Doughnut.

@GreetingsFromKelly:

Time for the full picture:

🍩 Lemon Lavender
🍩 Cookie dough
🍩 Very Chocolate
🍩 Cookies and Cream
🍩 Vanilla iced
🍩 Chocolate iced

Which one are you grabbing first?

A large square donut with a huge scoop of cookie dough on top, drizzled with chocolate icing. The donut is held in my hand, but is much, much larger than my hand.

@GreetingsFromKelly:

Exhibit A why I like to think of donuts as a dessert.

A few weeks ago I put a poll in my stories asking if you thought donuts were a breakfast or a dessert.
And 60% of responses said donuts are dessert! But I’m sure the other 40% wasn’t picturing this cookie-dough-overload pastry when they responded.

Maybe we need to start exploring the idea of having a breakfast dessert. You eat your eggs & fruit first and then grab a bite of breakfast-dessert donut. Who’s with me?

A couple of donuts on display at Vincent Van Doughnut. The Flavors are Lemon Lavender, Blueberry Glazed, Chocolate Peanut butter, and Chocolate Covered Chocolate.

@GreetingsFromKelly:

I am likely the most hated person among donut shop employees. I’m the person who goes in thinking I’m going to order just one donut…oh but that one looks good…and that one…yeahhh can I add that one in, too? And pretty soon they’re fishing my donuts out of the small paper bag and putting them inside a big box for a dozen.

But when you go into a place like Vincent Van Doughnuts and see all the flavor combos right there in front of your eyes…can you blame me?

Sorry to all the donut shops that have had to deal with me eating with my eyes and never coming in with a strategy. I’m sad to report that visiting 10 of St Louis’ best known donut shops in the span of less than a month has not made me any better prepared to answer the question, “how many donuts are you getting today?”

🍩: @vincentvandoughnut in the Grove. And yes, lemon lavender was delicious.

An old brick building with big glass windows and a large gold donut painted on the side. A sign in the distance tells you that this shop is "Vincent Van Doughnut"

@GreetingsFromKelly:

Loving the beautiful weather we’ve been having lately, today not included, and the carry-out lifestyle that has encouraged us to spend more time outside.

We did the last of our donut exploring this weekend, which included a stop at Vincent Van Doughnuts. We took our donuts to go and enjoyed them out on the deck with an extra big cup of coffee and sunshine.

A Box of Donuts that reads "Kelly, you deserve a donut"

@GreetingsFromKelly:

Where did you donut this weekend? .

I love a box of donuts that comes with a pep-talk. I deserve a donut every day and am happy to receive that affirmation.

🍩: @pharoahsdonuts in downtown STL. They’re the freshest, softest, most delicious donuts you will ever eat. That’s a promise. They’re freshly made right in front of your face so you can see just how delicious they are.

Donuts are perfect for quarantine because they’re designed to be carried out. These ones will stay just as fresh as the day you bought them for a few days if you store them right, so don’t be afraid to buy a whole dozen. Or more. No judgements.

A woman wearing a hat and face mask prepares mini donuts for us next to a tiny donut fryer. She lays them all out before decorating. A sign on the back wall reads "mini do co"

@GreetingsFromKelly:

More photos from our donut tour, or are you guys sick or delicious content? Vote below.

At Mini Donut Co, they fry your donuts right in front of you. They float the dough down this tiny donutty river and magically they become delicious little bites.

Alright now, be honest. More donuts? Or move on? Let me know what you think in the comments I will still love you no matter how you vote.

Donuts from the Donut Experiment in St Charles, Mo. The bag in the background says "The Donut Experiment in St Charles MO" There are four donuts on a paper plate. One is covered in sprinkles, one is a donut covered in crushed Oreos. One is a cinnamon caramel donut, and one donut is covered in crushed Reese's cups.

@GreetingsFromKelly:

If you’re getting sick of my posts about donuts…you probably need to go buy a donut.

Donut Experiment let’s you build your own donuts. You get to invent your own creation by picking your icing, toppings, and drizzle. I think we did pretty all right with our creations.

I’m going through a weird time with food. I’m entering a new phase of quarantine where I don’t want to eat anything ever. I’m not hungry, I don’t crave anything ever. Last night I ate one cookie for dinner. It was the only thing that sounded good and it was all that I was hungry for. It’s also completely unlike me to not eat dinner. Anyone else going through a weird stage of lockdown-life right now?

Thirty different flavors of mini donuts all displayed on a stand with tiny flags sticking out of each donut flavor to tell you which one is which.

@GreetingsFromKelly:

Which flavor are you trying first?

A tiny donut about the size of a quarter. It is a fully formed donut, not a donut hole. It is covered in icing and rainbow sprinkles and is held between my index finger and thumb.

@GreetingsFromKelly:

It’s like a donut, only tinier and cuter!

Mini Donut Co makes these tiny, bite sized donuts that taste as good as they look. They’re made fresh right before your eyes (you can even watch your donut dough float down the fryer river!)

They’re made so fresh they’re still warm when you get them. And there’s truly nothing better than a warm, freshly made donut on a rainy day.

A portion of the neon sign located at Strange Donuts. The whole sign reads "Stay Strange" but it is partially cut off in the preview photo.

@GreetingsFromKelly:

Things are strange right now and they’re going to stay that way for a while. Donuts help.

Me eating a donut in my open concept dining room. The donut is almost as big as my head and covered in cinnamon toast crunch. My living room is easily seen in the background.

@GreetingsFromKelly:

Last night I made a major mistake!

I made the mistake of looking at super fancy expensive hotel rooms on the Vegas Strip that typically go for thousands and are currently available for hundreds. Some are not much more than $200! Seriously. Go look! (If you want to torture yourself…)

I had almost convinced myself last night that I wanted to go. Huge suites for only $200, how could we not do that? I searched far and wide for the loop holes that would make this work. I even looked into driving out there for a second (in the two times we have driven across the country, we have never been able to accomplish this in less than 5 days. Not very economical for a vacation where the road is not the destination…)

I get these planning kicks from time to time. Unrealistic obsessions. Jason nods along, listens to my “what ifs,” and even helps me out with my research all before kindly reminding me, “you don’t even want to leave the house right now, do you really want to drive to Las Vegas?”

A few years ago I found phrase that I really felt summed up our relationship in the best way possible: “You keep me safe, I’ll keep you wild.” And I think that’s true for last night, too.

Except last night it was more like “you keep me from having a germ-induced panic attack on the Las Vegas Strip, I’ll keep you looking forward to the day we can take our next greatest adventure.”

🍩: @strangedonuts Stranger from last weekend. Picked it up for carry-out and enjoyed it at home! It was horchata cream filled and I immediately buy anything I see with the word horchata in it. This was no exception.

@GreetingsFromKelly:

Finding some Maplewood favorites out in the suburbs. Even though to some people, Maplewood is also the suburbs. So really, it’s like I’m finding donuts in the ‘burbs of the ‘burbs.

Donut travel is the only travel we’ve got right now, so why not take a trip to a new side of town. After all, what else have you got to do with all this free time?

Looking for even more St Louis Donuts? You’re in luck! I wrote an entire post about all of my favorite St Louis Donuts. You can check that out using the button below.
